To Wear or Not to Wear? What you should wear to the Interview.

Interview Advice: What to Wear, What to Wear

“I base most of my fashion sense on what doesn’t itch.” Gilda Radner
Let’s face it, we live in a much less formal era than those preceding. The anomaly of casual Friday has become the norm in American culture. Many people work from home, conquering the world through a computer while wearing a comfy pair of sweatpants. This new trend can lead one astray when it comes to the medical school interview. The increase in informality is compounded by the fact that many of those being interviewed may never have had the opportunity to wear a suit for a formal event.
Often times, an applicant is left with an awful feeling shortly before an interview when they realize they may not be in compliance with the “dress code.” It can be distressing when you discover there are rules to the game but no one gave you a copy...

Below Is a list of some other Helpful threads pertaining to Interview Dresscode

Studying for The Biology Section of the DAT

Below is a list of topics that are covered on the DAT, as listed by the ADA on the DAT portion of their website:

http://www.ada.org/dat.aspx

The scope of the test covers a wide range of topics, but the questions are not as in depth as one might see in a class devoted to a specific topic like Ecology.

Major Biology Topics to Know for the DAT
Cell and Molecular Biology

  • Origin of life
  • Cell metabolism (including photosynthesis/enzymology)
  • Cellular processes
  • Thermodynamics
  • Organelle structure and function
  • Mitosis/meiosis
  • Cell structure
  • Experimental cell biology

Diversity of Life

  • Biological Organization and Relationship of Major Taxa (Six-Kingdom, Three-Domain System) – plantae, animalia, protista, fungi, eubacteria (bacteria), archae, etc.

Structure and Function of Systems

  • Integumentary
  • Skeletal muscular
  • Circulatory
  • Immunological
  • Digestive
  • Respiratory
  • Urinary
  • Nervous/senses
  •  Endocrine
  • Reproductive

Developmental Biology

  • Fertilization
  • Descriptive embryology
  • Developmental mechanisms
  • Experimental embryology

Genetics

  • Molecular genetics,
  • Human genetics
  • Classical genetics
  • Chromosomal genetics
  • Genetic technology

Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior

  • Natural selection
  • Population genetics/speciation
  • Cladistics
  • Population and community ecology
  • Ecosystems
  • Animal behavior (including social behavior)

Two great test prep materials that I highly recommend using for preparing for this section and brushing up on your Biology are: Cliffs AP Bio Book and Kaplan's Blue Book.

Kaplan's Blue Book has material for each and every section on the DAT. It is a great resource to refresh yourself with the general concepts of many of the topics tested on the DAT. However, I would not recommend using only KBB to prepare, as it does not everything.

As I was preparing for my test, I read many good recommendations about the Cliff's AP Biology Prep Book. It is not super in depth, but it does cover a very wide array of topics. Also it's very easy on your wallet!

You can sometimes find a great deal on these books used at eBay or half.com, but I often find that Amazon has the cheapest prices, used or new.

Buying both of these books NEW will probably cost around $55-60, including shipping. Not a bad investment to improve your DAT score!

NYU Dental School Gets Sued by Former Student Part 2

MANHATTAN — A former student at NYU's College of Dentistry was denied her diploma because she fell short of the $20,000 in dental procedures she says she was required to perform while attending the school, according to a lawsuit.
The ex-student, Katie Kickertz, said the university told her on her graduation day in May 2009 that she missed the target dollar amount of completed dental work by about $2,000, according to court documents.

Manhattan's appellate court ruled in Kickertz' favor Thursday, overturning a lower court finding in favor of NYU.
The court determined that NYU must grant Kickertz her bachelors and dental school degrees, as it would be unfair to leave Kickertz with "no degree of any kind after seven years of educational toil and the expenditure of hundreds of thousands of dollars," according to the ruling.

Kickertz told the New York Post that when she was told of the $2,000 shortfall, faculty advisers urged her to make up the difference. After she made a credit card payment, school officials canceled the payment, calling it an ethical breach.

NYU, which is planning to challenge the decision issued Thursday, argues that Kickertz was expelled. . . .

NYU Dental School Gets Sued by Former Student Part 1

"They’re extracting more than teeth at NYU’s dental school."
A former honors student says she was forced to meet a $38,000 quota in clinical work for the school — and then had to buy a whole other education after it pulled her two degrees on graduation day over a $2,000 shortfall.
“I was devastated . . . It was horrible,’’ said Katie Kikertz, now 28 and a licensed dentist in Illinois.
She recently won a suit to have her BA and dental degrees from NYU honored.
The Manhattan appellate court decision said the school’s treatment of her “shocks the conscience.”
“Katie was tortured and tormented by NYU for 2 1/2 years,’’  . . . . .

What Factors are Considered in Dental School Admissions?

This is most definitely a question that has been in the mind of a pre-dental student at one point in time.
The following items are all factors that are considered when you submit your application through AADSAS, and things you should work on building and improving if possible:

  1. GPA - Your Science GPA and Overall GPA are just two of many ways that AADSAS will calculate your GPA. Check out their page on GPA calculations HERE.
  2. DAT Scores - A standardized criteria used to judge applicants to dental schools. Scoring well on this can validate a strong GPA or invalidate a weak GPA (to a certain extent).
  3. Extra Curricular Activities - Community Service, Clubs, Sports, Hobbies, Academic Awards, Research, etc. Activities that develop your manual dexterity and hand eye coordination are especially useful since dentistry requires this.
  4. Shadowing - Try to shadow a general dentist and at least a couple specialists. You want to get your feet wet in the field that you will potentially be in for a large part of your life. It's also great seeing the variety of ways different dentists do to accomplish the
  5. Letters of Recommendation - Serves as an objective portrayal of who you are. This year, AADSAS limits applicants to 4 individual letters of recommendation or 1 committee letter + 1 individual letter.
  6. Personal Statement - Explain why want to be a dentist.
  7. The Interview - Your chance to show dental schools who you are and why you are interested in dentistry and their school.

Getting into dental school is a very competitive process. Make sure to maximize your chances by working on the aforementioned factors! It is never too early to begin preparing!

What to do the Day Before and During TEST DAY!

So, you are sitting in your room. It is the day before test day. The day before the test that can make or break what you will be for the rest of your life.

Nervous?

That's ok. It is perfectly normal.

Before I continue on, I wanted to say that like most things in life, if you put in the time and work, you will get results. You reap what you sow ladies and gentleman (in most cases at least, I'm sure many of you have gotten away with procrastination on school work at some point in your lives or another, but I digress).

Some people (the super over the top overly prepared ones I'm guessing ;) ) prefer to spend the day before the test relaxing. Hitting the gym, hanging out with friends/family, playing video games, watching a movie, etc.

Some (like me) try to squeeze and cram as much information into their head as humanly possible the day before.

You should do what best suits YOU! Do whatever it takes (within reason) to make yourself feel better about yourself and build your confidence. Whether it be relaxing and unwinding most of the day before, or studying like a madman. To each his (or her) own.

So the day is over and it's bedtime. If you are like I was, and have an early test time, I would definitely recommend taking a sleep aid or something a few hours before bedtime to help you sleep, because most likely your body will be in the fight or flight response (I know I was and I only got a few hours of sleep before my test 0.o). All that adrenaline will probably be coursing through your veins during test day, so you will probably still be awake if you didn't get much sleep the night before, but having a few extra hours of sleep under your belt will only help.

So it's TEST DAY!
Here are some useful things to know:

-Eat a good, healthy breakfast. Eating healthy will enhance your mood and overall well-being. Don't drink too much water. Your bladder will already be overactive since your sympathetic nervous system will probably be activated.

-Arrive early. Make sure you visit the test center in advance so you know exactly where it will be and how long it will take you so you can schedule accordingly.

-Bring a set of earplugs that you like. You ARE ALLOWED To bring them in with you. If you are as unfortunate as I was to have someone pounding on the keyboard next to you during testing (and are sensitive to noise), these will help. They will muffle the sound, but if you put the headphones provided at Prometric testing centers on top of the earplugs, you get BEAUTIFUL SILENCE.
*The headphones might hurt your ears after a bit, but the silence is worth it in my opinion

-Wear something COMFORTABLE. You will be sitting down for half a day. You don't want tight pants or an itchy piece of clothing, etc. to detract from your full scoring potential. Consider bringing a jacket as the room might be a bit frigid (mine was).

-This is how test day went for me:
When you get to the center, you sign in first on a sheet, get a locker to put all your stuff in, than you wait till the workers process other people taking tests (People will be there for all kinds of tests, GRE, MCAT, LSAT...). They call your name, you go into the office, and they take a scan of your right and left index fingers (3x each). Than they take a picture of you give you your "Scrap Paper" and you are good to go. I don't know if all centers are like this, but instead of a whiteboard, I got laminated graph paper and fine tip sharpies as my "scratch paper". You are now on your way to acing the DAT

Below is a video posted by Prometric on YouTube on what to expect during test day.

The Key Steps in the Dental Application Process

Below is a "Fill-in" chart you can use to help you stay organized during the whole dental application process.

Just right click the image, save the image, print it out.

Fill in Chart for Dental Application Process

This convenient table is an excerpt from Dr. Joseph Kim's "The Pre-Dental Guide".

Dr. Kim has "consistently scored in the 99th percentile on all of his major high school and undergraduate standardized tests, including the DAT. He is a National Merit Finalist and Scholar.
He also helped prep students as an instructor for tests like the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and DAT, helping many students receive numerous academic awards for scholarship."
Also, because he was involved in working with dental school admissions, he understands the ins and outs of the whole process.

I found this book very useful as an early pre-dent. It offers some nice "tricks" to the DAT and has a lot of good information that you won't find anywhere else. It will save you valuable time.

I highly recommend this book especially for those of you who are new/not as familiar with the whole application process for dental school.

There are a few typos, and the book is a little outdated, but for $5-10 you can't go wrong! If you have a Kindle or an iPad, it is only $3.47!

2012 AAPD Meeting

Beautiful La Jolla, CA

Sorry that this post has been so delayed. A combination of me being very under the weather since I came back from San Diego (didn't wash my hands on the plane ride back before eating >_> ), AADSAS and other occurrences I haven't had a chance to post about the trip.

The internet is a powerful tool. My belief in it was confirmed as several speakers spoke of how to optimize one's online presence by maximizing the clarity and advertisement of the full range of services offered by a practice. Social media along with the website are the two major avenues one can use to accomplish this.

Social media is especially valuable as it is FREE!

All of you should do yourself a favor and become familiar with social media if you haven't already so in the future when you have your own/are part of a practice, these free methods of advertisement can be used to showcase your practice and all the of its goods and services.

AAPD Meeting San Diego

I've been lucky enough  to be provided the opportunity to come to San Diego for the annual AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry).

What a beautiful city! I know this isn't related to the DAT but I thought it'd be fun to post pictures of the meeting and maybe make a post about some  the lectures I will attend where speakers will talk of current topics in Pediatric Dentistry.

Stay tuned for pics and posts :)

Hope Studies are going well for you all!

Average Dental Admissions Test (DAT) Scores from 2002-2011 and other DAT Statistics

In the year 2011, 13,777 DAT tests were administered. This figure is slightly lower than the 13,406 tests administered in 2010.
However, in 2011, there were 8,732 test takers, about 150 more examinees than 2010's 8,585. (See figures below).

Number of DAT Tests Administered from 2002-2011

Number of DAT test takers from 2002-2011

Although the average number of test takers from 2006-2011 has been hovering around 8,700 examinees a year, the average score for the DAT has been steadily on the rise. (See below)

Average First Time DAT Scores from 2002-2011

In 2002, the average SNS/PAT/ACA scores were 17.2/16.5/17.5 for people that took the DAT for the first time. Last year, the numbers were up to 18.1/18.7/18.4!

In terms of gender and race statistics of test takers, the gender ratio has remained around 50:50 (give or take a percent or two) throughout 2002-2011.

Roughly half of all test takers throughout 2002-2011 were Caucasians.  Asians made up about 20% of the test takers. African Americans and Hispanics comprised roughly 12% together, and about 1% of examinees are Pacific Islanders.

Okay, You have just completed the entire science review, math, and PAT review of the entire DAT in 4 weeks. Take the next 2 days off, you deserve it.

Before going further, from this point forward, your going to be mostly working on problem solving, whenever you come across a problem (ESPECIALLY IN THE SCIENCES), make sure you understand it 100%. Understand why every answer is correct / not correct, don’t let anything pass by you. Use your review books, come to SDN on the DAT forums and ask questions, just make sure you understand all the problems from this point forward.

You will be spreading the destroyer problems over a 2 week period. The new 2010 destroyer has 232 orgo, 242 GC, and 377 biology questions. I will divide them such that over the next 2 weeks, you will go over the ENTIRE destroyer 2x times. Each day you will do 22 orgo problems, 23 GC problems, and 36 biology problems

Thursday: Do the following DAT destroyer problems:
Orgo 1 – 22

Do MATH destroyer test #1. I am going to suggest for you to not time your self. First learn to do things right, then work on your speed. Do these tests, mark your answers on a separate sheet (but not on the exam itself cause your going to do each exam multiple times). When your done taking test #1, go over EVERY problem you got right and wrong. You should learn MATH destroyer really well cause about 80% of those problems simply reappear on the real DAT
